MTET records highest ever pass percentage

Shillong, Sept 3: Over 84 per cent of this year’s Meghalaya Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) have cleared the examination, recording it as the highest ever success rate in the eligibility test.

While 84.3% cleared the Paper-I meant for Class I-V, 85.32% passed the Paper-II meant for Class VI-VIII in the results declared by the Directorate of Educational Research & Training (DERT) on Wednesday.

In Paper I, 18,546 of the total 21,999 candidates have qualified while in Paper-II, 18,672 of the 21,884 candidates have cleared the hurdle.

The success rate in 2025 was 63.15 per cent in Paper-I and 64.43 per cent in Paper-II and that of 2023 were as low as 8.11% and 9.27% respectively.

The MTET, conducted under NCTE norms, is mandatory for appointment as elementary teachers in government schools.

DERT has been conducting the test since 2019.

The 2026 examination was held on July 24 across 113 venues covering all districts and sub-divisions.

DERT Director JU Kharpuri said the exam was conducted in a professional, fair and transparent manner.

She said the directorate had provided MTET Guidebooks 2026 for both papers and a YouTube tutorial on OMR sheet filling to help candidates, especially in-service teachers who have been in service for several years.

Candidates can check results at www.megeducation.gov.in.

Kharpuri said DERT plans to hold at least three more MTET examinations — tentatively in January 2027, September 2027 and March 2028 — before the Supreme Court-mandated deadline, to give another chance to those who could not qualify.
