No construction allowed on Lumpongdeng island: CM

Unfortunate that protesting GTF activists not satisfied yet: Conrad

Shillong, April 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday reiterated that no permanent construction would take place on Lumpongdeng island in Umiam and ruled out any proposed talks with activists of Green Tech Foundation (GTF).

Informing that construction is allowed only in the existing Orchid Barapani, the Chief Minister said the island’s ecosystem and environment will be maintained.

He said “their concerns have already been addressed” emphasising that no permanent construction will be allowed on the island, and only temporary, eco-friendly structures will be built for specific events.

Expressing disappointment over GTF members not yet satisfied with the government’s assurance, he said, “It’s unfortunate that they are not satisfied because that is the fact of the matter.”

Asked if the government would invite the protesters for talks, the chief minister said, “The island will remain as it is… I don’t see any confusion in that.”

On allegations of tree felling, Sangma attributed the incident to individuals, stating that the company involved in the project was not responsible.

“The police has clarified that there were individuals involved, not the company… it’s nothing to do with the project,” he said, urging citizens to be assured that there will be no damage to the island.

He urged the protesters to cooperate, stating that the project aims to boost tourism in the state.

The GTF has been on an indefinite hunger strike since April 8, demanding the withdrawal of the project, citing environmental concerns.

The foundation’s chairman, H Bansiewdor Nonglang, has vowed to continue the protest until the government provides written assurance that the project will be scrapped.
