Shillong, May 26: Meghalaya’s iconic Umiam Lake has transformed into a national arena for one of India’s premier sailing events, drawing 79 sailors from nine sailing clubs across the country.

The 3rd North East Regatta officially set sail on May 25 and will run for six days until May 29. It  was  launched in the esteemed presence of Lt Gen TSA Narayanan, AVSM (Retd), Dr. Vijay Kumar D,  Commissioner & Secretary, Dept. of Tourism, Govt. of Meghalaya and other key officials.

Nestled among pine-clad hills, Umiam’s serene blue waters provide a striking contrast to the burst of motion from the competing boats.

Organised by the Umiam Sailing Club in partnership with the Yachting Association of India and supported by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya, the regatta is a vibrant blend of sport, natural beauty, and regional ambition.

Sailors will compete in five boat classes—Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, 420, and 29er—each with its own challenges and thrills. Notably, the inclusion of double-handed boats like the 420 and 29er adds a layer of technical complexity, requiring sharp teamwork and strategic finesse. Their presence marks a significant step forward for competitive sailing in the Northeast.

This year’s regatta is also a celebration of youth—the rising tide of talent from the region and beyond. Many participants are young sailors, still learning the ropes but already navigating complex waters with confidence and camaraderie.

For the Meghalaya government, the event represents more than competition. It’s a strategic move to position Umiam Lake as a national hub for water sports and eco-adventure tourism, strengthening the state’s foothold on India’s adventure tourism map.
