NPP to work hard for absolute majority in GHADC polls: Rakkam

Shillong, July 5: The National People’s Party (NPP) has geared up its preparations for a landslide win in the upcoming Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, NPP leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma exuded confidence over securing absolute majority in the elections while not ruling out the possibility of a pre-poll alliance.

“NPP will work very hard to get an absolute majority in the GHADC elections,” he told reporters.

“We are not taking any chances,” he said while responding to a query on the opposition’s preparation for the polls.

According to the NPP leader, his party would focus on highlighting its achievements in various sectors.

He said the government led by chief minister Conrad K Sangma had brought transformation in road communication, health, education, sports, agriculture to name a few to some extent.

“Look at the beautiful roads, playgrounds, many colleges, and school buildings. We have established all streams in all government schools. We have upgraded and given good college buildings,” he said, adding, “We have proven it to the people of the state and Garo Hills.”

However, he said, there is always room for improvement and urged the voters to assess the government’s performance.

Asked, Sangma claimed that over 100 candidates have expressed interest in contesting from NPP, with multiple aspirants vying for tickets in certain constituencies.

The minister also dismissed claims of the party’s potential loss in GHADC polls, but he noted that election outcomes can vary significantly as happened in Lok Sabha elections in Garo Hills that Congress won by huge margin but in Gambegre bye-election, NPP emerged victorious within a month.
