Over 2 lakh MT waste of Marten landfill recycled

Shillong, Dec 18: Over 2 lakh tonnes of legacy waste at Marten dumping ground here have been excavated for processing, and the processing is under progress, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar said on Wednesday.

“For the new one, we are yet to finalize. While we are yet to finalize the new location, in the meantime, we have to process all the old dumps by the method of legacy wastes,” Dhar said.

He added that the clearance of legacy waste is on track, with over 2 lakh tonnes of waste already recycled, and an estimated 1.8 lakh tonne remaining to be processed.

“For the last one year, it is more than 3-4 lakh, so now more than 2 lakh have been recycled already, so maybe 1.8 lakh is still there, and hopefully, within a short span of time, we will be able to clear the legacy wastes from Marten dumping ground.”

Dhar expressed confidence that the work will be completed within the stipulated time, as per the tender agreement. “I am very sure they will be able to complete the clearing of the legacy waste from Marten within this stipulated time as per tender agreement.”

He thanked the local communities for their cooperation and support in the waste management efforts.

“I am very thankful to all the localities as we have done awareness programmes from the department, and they are very cooperative. We are very thankful to all those localities who are part of the objective to make the city clean.”

Dhar appealed to the public to continue segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, stating, “We have put many centres with new small machineries, mostly now, especially, we request them to segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Such small things have a lot of positive impact.”
