Over 200 kg Cannabis contraband seized from car

Nongpoh, Oct 28: Random vehicle checking being conducted across the highway passing through Ri-Bhoi district have resulted in the seizure of a huge amount of cannabis contraband from a vehicle, early Tuesday morning.

Police had flagged down a Maruti Expresso vehicle (AS-01-EG-7234) just before dawn broke, but as the team approached the car its driver and one occupant got out and fled into the darkness. Despite a hot chase they managed to give the cops the slip.

When the vehicle was inspected in the presence of an officer and independent witnesses, the police found the luggage compartment packed with 28 packets of suspected contraband. On testing each packet, a positive result was shown for Cannabis (Ganja). The total weight of the seized contraband was 206.054 kg.
