Tura, April 3: A man sustained bullet injuries on both legs in what police say was an accidental discharge of a gun during a late night incident of rash driving when two highly intoxicated men in a car tried to run over a police patrol team on night duty in Mendipathar town of North Garo Hills district.
According to police, a patrolling team of Mendipathar Police and CRPF personnel were on duty near Pushpa Cloth Store at Mendipathar bazar around 11:30 PM Wednesday when the incident occured.
A white car (AS 01 AM 7750) coming from the Mendipathar police station side of the road in high speed reportedly drove recklessly toward them forcing the police team to scramble to safety.

As the CRPF personnel scrambled to safety, the driver, identified as Sengrim K. Sangma (28) of Thapa Darenchi village, allegedly accelerated again in an attempt to flee.
According to police, fearing an attack by criminals, a CRPF jawan unlocked the safety pin of his AK rifle and tried to open the door of the vehicle that was trying to make a getaway when the AK-47 rifle reportedly discharged a round injuring the co-passenger Neobirth R. Marak (28), also of Thapa Darenchi, in the thighs.
Both men were reportedly found heavily intoxicated and were rushed to Mendipathar PHC. Marak, who sustained bullet injuries was referred to a higher facility for further treatment.
Police have seized multiple alcohol bottles from the car and said they are initiating a legal action against the driver as investigations begin.
