Police hunt for suspect in planting IED at Umsning

Shillong, Oct 11: Ri-Bhoi police have identified a suspect behind planting of suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Umsning market in the district.

“One suspect has been identified, and the police team is working to apprehend him,” Ri-Bhoi superintendent of police V Rathore said.

The suspected IED contained in a bag inside an unidentified compound in front of Meghalaya Rural Bank was successfully defused, averting a possible tragedy.

The police swiftly acted after receiving the information about an abandoned bag containing suspected explosives around 7:30 PM on Saturday.

Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) and K-9 team were immediately requisitioned and confirmed the presence of explosives in the bag, he said.

With expertise, the BDDS team successfully defuse the IED.

“Preliminary analysis revealed that the IED was made using 4.7 kg of gelatine as an explosive, 10 detonators, and approximately 50 iron rod pieces as splinters. All materials were seized, and necessary precautions were taken,” Rathore said.
