Power cuts due to maintenance work: MeECL

Shillong, Dec 4: The MeECL has clarified that the frequent power cuts in the state are load-shedding, but shutdowns for maintenance and upgradation work.

“Shutdown needs to be taken, we are taking a lot of work under RDSS and other schemes to upgrade the lines. They can’t be done on live lines; notices are given in newspapers every day,” said Sanjay Goyal, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Goyal said shutdowns are necessary to repair and strengthen the power infrastructure.

“It’s the only season when we can do the work. It will continue in various localities on various dates,” he said.

Clarifying that load-shedding is not being implemented, he said, “There is no load-shedding. Shutdown can also be due to local issues, like a meter catching fire, and we have to cut the line and remove the wire.”

The MeECL CMD urged residents to bear with the disruptions, saying, “You have to give time to MeECL to repair and strengthen the lines. The impact will be seen after a year when there are strong winds and no power cuts.”

MeECL is undertaking extensive work, including adding 2,500 transformers, 4,500 km of new lines, and replacing 1,000 km of wires.

Goyal assured that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions, especially during exam time.
