Prez approves Keralam’s plea to withdraw Private Universities Bill; fresh legislation soon: Minister

Kottayam (Keralam), Nov 6: The Keralam government has received the President’s assent to withdraw the Kerala State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2025, the state Higher Education Minister Roji M John said on Friday.

The government had decided during the recent Assembly session to withdraw the bill, which was passed during the previous LDF regime and had been pending consideration by the president.

Speaking to reporters, John said the government had promised in its manifesto to introduce necessary amendments to the law governing universities and that a fresh bill could be brought in only after withdrawing the existing legislation.

“The State Assembly had passed a resolution during its previous session requesting the Governor to forward the proposal for withdrawal to the President. Although the Opposition had raised objections, questioning the Assembly’s authority to seek the withdrawal, the president has now approved the request,” he said.

The government would prepare a fresh bill and introduce it in the Assembly at the earliest, he added. (PTI)
