Shillong, Mar 26: Over four months after her appointment as pro-vice chancellor of North Eastern Hill Uniersity, Prof Sherwin M Sungoh has taken charge following persuasions from the Centre and state government officials.
She was appointed as Pro VC in November 2024, but she refrained from joining all along due to the unrest prevailed in the university over demands for removal of the vice-chancellor Prof PS Shukla and other issues.
However, the prolonged absence of the VC from the headquarters since March 3, which hugely affected functioning of the university, has prompted the Ministry of Education to persuade her further to join the duty.
Accordingly, and also following requests from state government officials, Prof Sungoh assumed the charge recently.
The officials underscored the importance of her leadership in NEHU at this critical juncture.
Meanwhile, Prof Sungoh stated she would discharge the duty of VC’s office until Prof Shukla resumed his responsibility.
Reaffirming her commitment to prioritising welfare of students and overall well-being of the institution, she has sought cooperation from all stakeholders of NEHU to help bring stability to the university.
