Sessions of two new colleges to start this year: CM

Science & Commerce colleges at Mawphlang and Mahendraganj

Shillong, Mar 11: Chief minister Conrad K Sangma has assured to start the academic sessions of two Science and Commerce colleges at Mawphlang and Mahendraganj from this year with the limited available infrastructure so far.

The under-construction buildings of the two colleges with Science and Commerce streams are not fully equipped yet to start the session in a full-fledged manner.

“We are aware that the completion of the construction (of the buildings) are taking more time but we strongly felt that we must start the academic sessions (of the two colleges) so that students do not miss out…Wherever building space available, we will start the courses,” Sangma in reply to a question in the state assembly on Tuesday.

He also assured to ensure that the contractors complete the construction of the buildings.

On the status of Science and Commerce College Mawphlang, education minister Rakkam A Sangma informed that the college achieved 86% physical progress in civil construction work and 94% financial progress. The project was rescheduled for completion in March 2025.

However, the Science and Commerce College Bahsapara (Mahendraganj) has achieved only 66% physical progress in construction work and 70% financial progress. The project was rescheduled for completion by 31 March 2026.

Meanwhile, the government has granted approval for creation of 46 posts in each of the colleges.

The plan and estimate for external electricity supply, external water supply and blacktopping of approach road are under process for both the colleges, he said.

Funded under 90:10 ratio, the Centre in 2017 sanctioned Rs 36 crore each for the colleges while it released Rs 31.17 crore for the college at Mawphlang and Rs 23.53 crore for the college at Bahsapara so far.
