Gangtok, Oct 5 (PTI) Sikkim leaders paid tributes to former chief minister Nar Bahadur Bhandari on his 85th birth anniversary on Monday, remembering his role in securing the inclusion of the Nepali in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
Bhandari served as the Chief Minister of Sikkim across two tenures from October 18, 1979, to May 11, 1984, and again from March 8, 1985, to June 17, 1994.
Taking to social media, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang paid tributes to the late leader and recalled his contribution to the state’s social, cultural and economic development.
He described Bhandari as a “distinguished leader” whose vision, dedication and service left an indelible mark on Sikkim’s progress.
“His tenure was marked by a deep commitment to the welfare of the people and a clear vision for the social, cultural and economic advancement of Sikkim,” the chief minister said.
Tamang said one of Bhandari’s most significant contributions was his “historic role” in securing the inclusion of the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
This safeguarded the linguistic rights of the Nepali-speaking community and gave enduring national recognition to the language and the state’s cultural identity, Tamang said.
Tamang also highlighted the state government’s decision to observe “Shri Bhandari Jayanti” as a gazetted holiday.
He also spoke of the Nar Bahadur Bhandari Fellowship Scheme, instituted in his memory, which allows deserving students from the state to pursue higher studies at leading universities around the world.
“His life and legacy remain a lasting reminder of the values of service, justice, equality and dedication to the people,” Tamang added.
