Singing Competition Unveils Hidden Talents of South West Garo Hills

Ampati, Dec 5: In a region renowned as the “Rock Capital of India,” the singing talent of South West Garo Hills has taken center stage, leaving audiences and district officials in awe. A singing competition, themed “For the Youth of Our Generation”, brought a spotlight to the hidden musical prodigies of this remote district. Organized by the District Administration of South West Garo Hills in collaboration with the Tourism Department, the event took place at the Multi-Facility Centre in Ampati, showcasing a thrilling blend of raw talent and cultural pride.

The competition, which culminated in a Grand Finale on Thursday, featured 21 finalists selected from intense audition rounds held across the district. The enthusiasm was palpable as participants, including students studying outside the district, traveling from Tura after their school exams to participate, displayed their passion for music. The event underscored the importance of creating opportunities for the youth to explore their God-given talents and gain confidence in their abilities. 

The Grand Finale was judged by local luminaries, including renowned artist Saldorik D Sangma, Johny D Sangma, and Z.D. Sangma, Assistant Research Officer of the Planning Branch, Ampati.

Bilsando Ch Marak was awarded the 1st prize, Crossmeda  Arengh claimed the 2nd prize, and  Praidison  D Marak secured the 3rd position. Special awards included the Best Costume, won by the Ampati Achik Cultural Society, and Consolation Prizes, awarded to Haijest N Marak and Mima Gorin G Sangma. 

Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak graced the occasion and awarded the prizes. In her address, she encouraged the youth to seize opportunities and refine their skills to build a professional career in music. “With festivals like the Cherry Blossom and Me•Gong Festival providing platforms for local artists, it is heartening to see our youth stepping forward with confidence. Meghalaya, once celebrated as the music capital of the country, can reclaim its title with efforts like these,” she said. 

The competition not only inspired young singers but also highlighted the district’s cultural richness. A large and enthusiastic audience witnessed the event, applauding the efforts of the participants and organizers alike. 

This initiative aims to nurture young talent and provide them with stepping stones to greater opportunities in the music industry. With the overwhelming success of the event, plans for future programs are already in motion, promising a brighter stage for the voices of South West Garo Hills. South West Garo Hills has proven itself as a treasure trove of musical talent, ready to shine on larger platforms in the near future.
