Special chairs for Cerebral Palsy beneficiaries distributed in Tura

Tura, Dec 17:  In a first of its kind, Customised Adaptive Chairs for people with the neurological disorder of Cerebral Palsy that had been made by specially abled persons from the region were distributed to beneficiaries at the District Social Welfare Office in Tura on Monday.

The Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Tura Sadar Manish Kumar graced the occasion as Chief Guest in the presence of other Officers of the district. The programme was organized by District Social Welfare Office, Tura in collaboration with District Resource Centre Disability Affairs, Tura and State Resource Centre on Disability Affairs, Shillong.

Speaking on the occasion, Manish Kumar said that the program is a testament of the collaborative efforts of the government along with civil society organisations and communities for facilitating the life of differently abled beneficiaries so that they can excel and explore their capabilities. Emphasizing on the Era of transformation, he said that these physical and social barriers can be broken by the intervention of the government, society and technology and make life easier for them.

Further, he said that complete inclusion of PWDs would be possible with the continuous support and facilitating these beneficiaries with employment opportunities along with the Accessible India campaign implemented by the Government of India so that all facilities such as education, infrastructure, employment, etc is accessible and inclusive for all without any discrimination.

He also mentioned that these Customised Adaptive Chairs were made by the Specially abled persons from the region after attending the training held at New Delhi.

Meanwhile, DRCDA Manager and Senior Physio-Therapist, Tura Civil Hospital Sujata Das highlighted on the symptoms and treatment of Cerebral Palsy which is a neurological disorder that affect a person’s ability to move, maintain balance and control their muscles and types of cerebral palsy are classified based on the mobility limitations. She also informed that these Adaptive customised Chairs are being made under the UDID Project for the CP beneficiaries on a trial mode which if found to assist the beneficiaries then it would be given to all the CP beneficiaries.

The Chief Guest along with other officers of the District distributed the Customised Adaptive Chairs for CP beneficiaries and also distributed Certificates for PWD Carpenters who had made these Adaptive Chairs. The beneficiaries have been selected from all the districts of Garo Hills region.

The District Social Welfare Officer, Tura Madonna T Sangma, Assistant Coordinator, UDID Project, Garo Hills Region, Jerry Chingre B Sangma, Supervisor, DSWO, Tura Stern H B Marak were among others who spoke on the occasion.
