State engineering college awaits AICTE nod

Shillong, Mar 4: Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Tuesday informed the Assembly that the government is waiting for the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for starting the academic session of the Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE) at Mawlai Kynton Massar.

Replying during the question hour, Sangma said the SGCE had applied for AICTE approval on December 26, 2024 to start two technical courses – civil engineering and electrical engineering.

Subsequently, two AICTE scrutiny meetings were held on January 22 and February 4.

“Experts from AICTE have advised the college authority to comply with some of the infrastructure deficiencies which are being addressed,” he added.

Providing details of the work done on the engineering college, Sangma informed that the buildings construction such as the academic block, administrative block and boys and girls’ hostels of SGCE were completed and inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on January 16, 2023.

The service connection – water supply, electrical connection and others are also in place, he added.

He also informed that the government has conveyed approval for establishment of SGCE and 55 posts were created.

The government has allowed the additional director of Polytechnic & Shillong Engineering College to hold additional charge as principal of SGCE, he stated.

“Government has conveyed approval to place 13 existing faculty of Shillong Polytechnic who are qualified for teaching in the engineering college,” Sangma said while informing that the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has conveyed approval for provisional affiliation for SGCE for a period of three years.

“Therefore, when we get the necessary permission of AICTE, we will start the academic session at the earliest,” he assured.
