Shillong, Sep 16: Taraghar, an iconic and heritage house in Shillong, which was once proposed to be the site for the new assembly building, has officially become the State Guest House as Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the newly constructed building on Tuesday.
Construction of the Rs 25-crore state-of-the-art facility comprising 18 premium rooms began in September 2022. Its operations and maintenance have been entrusted to Hotel Polo Towers through an open competitive bidding process.
In his address, Sangma described the inauguration as a milestone achievement, symbolic of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening Meghalaya’s identity and infrastructure.
Emphasising his government’s foundational initiatives since 2018, he recalled adopting the State emblem and the state anthem besides infrastructure such as the guest house.
The chief minister also highlighted Meghalaya’s record economic growth, the government’s continued focus on health and education, and ongoing investments around Ward’s Lake to complement the new facility.
Addressing the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong reflected on the absence of a state guest house for nearly 25 years.
Highlighting the government’s decisive move to build the state guest house at Taraghar despite criticism, he said it is a “gift to the people of Meghalaya.”
He underlined the need for it to be showcased at national level, including to Prime Minister during his visits to the State.
Chief Secretary DP Wahlang emphasized the significance of the new guest house in strengthening the State’s ability to host distinguished visitors.
He noted that the facility will not only enhance Meghalaya’s image but also result in significant cost savings compared to earlier practices of hosting guests in private hotels.
Commissioner and Secretary (GAD) CVD Diengdoh highlighted the vision and effort behind the project.
