Shillong, June 17: The Jaintia Students’ Union has urged the state government to rebuild the District Library Auditorium in Jowai citing it unfit for seminars, cultural events or public programs.
In a memorandum submitted to Minister in-charge Arts & Culture Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday, JSU said the structure has outlived its safety and utility.
JSU argued that minor repairs would no longer help and pushed for a modern, state-of-the-art facility that could serve students and preserve local heritage.
The students’ body also proposed naming the new auditorium after Late Prof. Barrister Pakem, former Vice-Chancellor of NEHU.
JSU said Prof Pakem was a towering intellectual whose contributions to education left a lasting impact on Meghalaya, especially Jaintia Hills, and dedicating the library to him would honor his legacy while inspiring future generations.
Expressing confidence in the minister’s commitment to arts and education, JSU urged prompt administrative and financial approval to begin reconstruction at the earliest.
