Student body seeks thorough probe into deaths of two Hajong youths in Shillong

Shillong, June 15: The Meghalaya Koch Students’ Union has called for a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the deaths of two Hajong youths, saying the circumstances have sparked serious public concern and that “truth above speculation” must guide the process.

In a statement issued on Monday, MKSU said it was in deep shock, grief, and concern after the bodies of Prinomi Hajong (22) of Balat and Simanta Hajong (21) of Ranikor were recovered at Lumsohphoh, Nongthymmai on the morning of June 14.

The union extended condolences to the families and said it stands “in full solidarity with the Hajong community during this difficult time.”

The student body stressed that the nature of the incident requires the state to go beyond routine procedure.

“Given the sensitive nature of the incident, MKSU believes that the matter deserves a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to establish the complete facts,” it said.

It urged all concerned authorities to ensure that the probe, forensic examination, and post-mortem findings are carried out professionally and kept free from any external pressure.

“Public confidence in the justice system depends on a fair and credible process that places truth above speculation,” the union stated, adding that all findings must be handled and communicated transparently in line with legal procedures.

MKSU also pressed the government to act decisively if the inquiry points to foul play, demanding that strict legal action be taken against anyone found responsible without exception.

Beyond the immediate case, the union asked the state and law enforcement agencies to strengthen safety and security measures for indigenous, minority, and marginalized communities across Meghalaya.

Reiterating support for the bereaved families, MKSU appealed for peace and communal harmony while the legal process unfolds.

“No family should be left without answers. No community should be denied justice,” the release concluded.
