Shillong, Oct 6: Two back-to-back fatal road mishaps within a couple of days in Ri-Bhoi district, including one claiming lives of four little girls in Bhoirymbong, has raised concern over the surge in road accidents in the district.
The number of road accidents in Ri-Bhoi, which has NH-6 passing through the district, has been high due to the heavy traffic on the arterial route that connects Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur and Assam.
Pointing at the recent increase in fatal road accidents in Ri-Bhoi district, Cabinet Minister and Jirang legislator Sosthenes Sohtun underlined the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
Speaking to media persons on Monday, Sohtun stressed that while accidents can be unpredictable, the police department can play a crucial role in mitigating their occurrence.
The minister highlighted the importance of adhering to safety measures, particularly the use of helmets among two-wheeler riders.
He urged the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the traffic in-charge to take stringent action against bikers, scooter riders, and drivers who fail to follow traffic rules, ensuring they drive safely and stay in their designated lanes.
Sohtun reiterated his consistent advice to the public, especially motorcyclists, to wear helmets and control their speed.
