Shillong, May 29: In a swift action by police, a youth caught in CCTV footage while sexually assaulting a young schoolgirl in Shillong recently was arrested within three days from Jorhat district of upper Assam on Thursday.
The accused, Himan Gogoi (24), was arrested from his relative’s house at Bamkukurachua village under Jorhat police station by a special police team formed under additional superintendent of police (ASP) Ivan B Diengdoh on May 26.
Accordingly, a team under sub-inspector Lavinia Khongwang left for Jorhat on May 28 and in the morning, a joint raid was conducted with Lahdoigarh police outpost of Jorhat leading to the arrest, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said in a statement on Thursday.
Earlier, the special team was formed based in an FIR about a viral video of CCTV footage showing a masked man lifting school apparel of the victims and taking photos on his mobile phone at Umsohsun locality in the city.
The SP said police had seized the mobile phone used in the crime and other incriminating evidence.
Gogoi was also found to be involved in a case of Teok police station in Jorhat district, Syiem said.
“The accused will be produced in the district court Jorhat and after acquiring transit remand, he will be produced in court of Shillong,” he informed.
Meanwhile, police identified the victim and the place where the incident took place on May 23.
She was examined whereby it was ascertained that the incident had occurred around 6.35 am for which a case was registered with Lumdiengjri police station, Syiem said.
Meanwhile, in yet another similar case, another young schoolgirl was sexually assaulted on May 19 between 7.15 am and 7.30 am on the steps near Dreamland, Police Bazaar. Sadar police station registered a case in this connection.
The SP said both the incidents were treated as special report cases, considering the sensitivity of the matter.
