Guwahati, Sept 3: The Muslim Students’ Union of Assam (MSUA) on Monday urged the state Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh to take strict action against crimes targeting women. The MSUA emphasized the need for a strong and uncompromising approach to ensure the safety and security of women throughout the state.
In a memorandum to DGP, MSUA president Jalal Uddin and general secretaries Miyarul Islam and Mainul Hussain expressed deep concern over the increasing incidents of crimes against women, such as domestic violence, rape, and sexual assaults, which they noted have become common and serious issues in the state.
They urged the DGP to take a strict stance against the perpetrators of these crimes and ensure that they are swiftly apprehended and put behind bars.
“We strongly condemned all instances of rape occurring in the state, regardless of the victims’ or perpetrators’ religious backgrounds. We believe that focusing on communal and religious aspects of the criminals only serves to promote such crimes,” they said.
The MSUA urged society to move beyond such divisive mindsets to effectively control crime and work towards creating a crime-free society.
The Muslim student body also expressed strong opposition to the “Miya Khedao” movement, which has been promoted by some regional organizations and has led to communal tension in the state. The MSUA highlighted that labourers from Central and Lower Assam who had moved to Upper Assam for work are now facing threats and are being forced to leave their workplaces due to this movement.
The student body condemned these actions, emphasizing that such divisive initiatives only contribute to unrest and harm the social fabric of the state.
“This type of call could lead to a serious law and order situation in the state and negatively impact communal harmony. We appealed to authorities to ensure the safety and security of labourers from Central and Lower Assam who are currently working in Upper Assam. We also urge for immediate action to maintain peace and unity in the state,” the memorandum stated.
The MSUA also raised concerns about a section of miscreants using social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram to spread hatred against a particular community. They warned that these communal statements could incite communal riots if not addressed promptly.
The MSUA appealed to the authorities to monitor social media posts closely and take legal action against those spreading such divisive content.
As regards to extra-judicial killings, the student body criticized the practice of extra-judicial killings, stating that the recent trend of fleeing accused individuals from police custody and their subsequent killing through extra-judicial means has become a troubling practice. They argued that such actions pose a serious threat to the rule of law and the integrity of the justice system.
The MSUA added that these killings be stopped immediately and called for necessary action against the police personnel and officers responsible for such breaches of duty. They expressed confidence that the Assam police, despite the challenges, are capable of upholding the law without resorting to extra-judicial measures.
