NE’s new political front likely to be announced in Delhi
Guwahati, Nov 3: A new political alliance of the North East is currently under formation with Meghalaya’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP) playing a significant role in it.
The coalition, aimed at creating a stronger and unified voice for the people of the region, is expected to be formally announced in New Delhi on Tuesday.
Ahead of the announcement, sources said, the Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA), led by royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, is likely to merge with the NPP to help form the coalition.
Headed by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, the new pan-Northeast political entity is likely to witness several prominent political leaders from the North East on board the alliance.
Besides Conrad K Sangma and Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, former BJP national spokesperson and Nagaland minister Mmhonlumo Kikon, People’s Party founder from Assam Daniel Langthasa, along with several other eminent leaders from across the region are likely to be part of the occasion on Monday.
TIPRA Motha, a strong regional force in Tripura, is currently the second-largest party in the state’s Legislative Assembly, with 13 MLAs.
Leaders from Dima Hasao in Assam, led by youth leader Daniel Langthasa — son of late Congress leader Nindu Langthasa, who was killed by DHD militants on June 4, 2007 — are also expected to join hands with the NPP.
Former BJP leader Mmhonlumo Kikon from Nagaland, who resigned from the BJP in August this year, is also part of the new alliance.
Sources said Pradyot Bikram Manikya was the first to propose the idea of a pan-Northeast People’s Party, and has been holding consultations with several political leaders across party lines in recent months to bring the idea to fruition.
