Shillong, Feb 24: Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira Tuesday informed that the government has invested ₹31 crore in Mairang constituency since 2017, yielding multiple benefits for locals.
In his reply tabled in the Assembly, Shira said tangible benefits include revenue generation, employment creation, local business growth and rural livelihood support.
“Tourist spending circulates within the local economy…and creates income opportunities in villages and remote areas,” he said.
The minister listed durable assets built under various schemes — wayside amenities, riverfront development, zip line, eco-resort and cable suspension bridge among others, adding tourism also preserves local heritage.
On tourist footfall, Shira said 28,503 tourists including 28,487 domestic and 16 foreign visited Mairang constituency during the past four years from 2022 to 2025.
