Traffic fear puts Shillong skywalk project on hold

Shillong, Jan 16: The state government has put on hold construction of the proposed skywalk at Barik Point here following apprehension about heavy traffic congestion during the construction period.

“We have put it (skywalk project) on hold. The reason is because we came across certain assessments that have shown that once we start the work, there’s going to be massive traffic congestion on this road,” said chief minister Conrad Sangma.

The project would lead to traffic congestion for the next one year or a year and a half, he said.

The government, meanwhile, will find an alternative way for the project to start with minimal impact on the traffic in the city.

On the Wahumkhrah beautification project, the chief minister informed that work for the ₹30-40 crore project has already been allotted.
