Trenches created to catch the rain: Marak

Shillong, April 30: Rejuvenation of rivers and streams in Meghalaya is a long-term measure, with several projects already underway across the state, PHE Minister Marcuise N Marak said on Thursday.

On the status of water source rejuvenation, Marak said, “Some of the projects are already on the job but as you are aware that rejuvenation of the streams, rivers, is not short term measures, we are going for a long term measures.”

The Minister said the government is adopting multiple strategies to revive water sources.

“In certain cases we are planting lots of trees and afforestation is being done and in some of the cases we are creating trenches to retain the rain water as the government of India stresses on the ‘catch the rain where it falls’,” he said.

Explaining the trenching method, Marak added, “So to catch the rain where it falls, we are creating trenches. That is also helping a lot because the moment the rain is coming, it goes inside the trenches and it sucks in the sub soil inside so that is how rejuvenation part starts there.”

According to him, the state’s approach aligns with the Centre’s ‘Catch the Rain’ campaign, which promotes rainwater harvesting and water conservation through community participation and sustainable watershed management.
