Two convicted in separate cases in South West Garo Hills

Ampati, April 21: Two criminals have received convictions from a court following successful investigations carried out by South West Garo Hills Police.

In the first case, registered as Ampati Police Station Case No. 78(11)2024 under Section 305 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the accused, Akash Baruah alias Akash Hajong, was arrested after an investigation led by UBSI Samuel A. Sangma. A chargesheet was filed on August 5, 2025.

After completion of the trial, the Court of the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Ampati, found the accused guilty under Section 305(a) BNS and sentenced him to two years of simple imprisonment along with a fine of Rs. 10,000.

In another case, registered at Ampati Women Police Station as Case No. 14(11)2022 under Sections 376(3)/377 of the IPC, read with Sections 5(k)(n)/6 of the POCSO Act, the accused, Nansing R. Marak, was arrested following an investigation conducted by WPSI Winchi G. Momin. The chargesheet was filed on September 12, 2023.

Upon conclusion of the trial, the Special Judge (POCSO), Ampati, convicted the accused under Section 377 IPC read with Sections 9(k)(n)/10 of the POCSO Act. He was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 1,000. In default of payment, he will undergo an additional one month of simple imprisonment.
