Two new colleges in state this year

Advertisement issued for 100 faculty members in 2 degree colleges

Shillong, Jan 24: The state government has decided to set up two new degree colleges in the state within this academic year.

The proposal for the degree colleges in East Jaintia Hills and West Khasi Hills have been approved by the ministry concerned, education minister Rakkam A Sangma told reporters on Friday.

Education department has already issued an advertisement for recruitment of over 100 faculty members for the new degree colleges.

A few more new colleges will start their academic session within this academic year. The colleges are Patharkhmah Degree College and Rongjeng Degree College and Mawphlang Commerce and Science College.

Pointing out the mismatch of educational infrastructure and number of teachers and schools, the minister said, “We have the highest number of schools and teachers compared to other states in the country. However, we don’t have enough infrastructure.”

However, he said, the MDA government led by chief minister Conrad Sangma has brought a lot of transformation in the education sector in the past five years.“We have constructed new buildings for colleges, secondary schools, primary schools and other professional institutions such as polytechnics and ITIs,” he said.

The minister also informed that the education department will issue an advertisement soon for recruitment of government lower primary school teachers.
