Won’t blame Govt for mine accident: Pala

Shillong, Feb 12: State Congress chief Vincent H Pala has refused to blame the state government for the recent mine tragedy claiming at least 31 lives, but alleged that the government had failed to handle the issue of coal mining properly.

Responding to reporters’ query on the coal mine blast at Mynsngat-Thangsko in East Jaintia Hills on Thursday, he said, “I will not blame the state government because accident can happen anywhere and anytime.”

However, he alleged that promises made by the ruling parties had led to illegal mining activities.

According to Pala, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, also in-charge of Mining, had promised to resume coal mining within six months of coming to power.

He said even the ruling ally BJP’s manifesto had claimed coal mining would restart in Meghalaya within 180 days.

“These promises were reiterated in Byndihati and Nongstoin, giving people hope that the issue would be resolved quickly. Unfortunately, these promises have not been fulfilled, betraying the trust of the people,” Pala said.

This has confused people, especially those dependent on coal mining for their livelihood, he said.

“It’s crucial for the government to clarify its stance on rat-hole mining and inform the public whether it will be allowed to continue,” Pala said.

He also pointed out that mine accidents had occurred mainly in East Jaintia Hills unlike West Khasi Hills or Garo Hills, and this needs a clarification from the government.

“I urge the state government to come up with a clear-cut clarification to avoid such incidents in the future,” he said.
