Police refute HNLC claim of human casualty in blast

Shillong, Dec 18: The state police refuted claims of death in the IED blast – claimed by proscribed HNLC – at Shymplong, East Jaintia Hills, and arrested two overground workers (OWGs) of the outfit in this connection on Thursday.

“Two persons have been arrested… They are OWGs and have admitted to the crime,” a senior police officer said.

East Jaintia Hills SP, meanwhile, confirmed ongoing investigation, citing a “larger conspiracy” and assuring more arrests.

“Investigation is ongoing, and several teams are working to crack the case.”

A water tanker vehicle was damaged in the blast on December 15 at Dhar Company at Shymplong.

Earlier, the HNLC claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had targeted Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar’s property over refusal to pay extortion demand.

The outfit’s general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw even expressed condolences for an alleged death, claiming it was unintentional.

Police, however, dismissed the death claim as “completely wrong”

“The claim of IED blast is right but the claim of death it is completely wrong,” the SP said.
