227 CCTVs installed, 200 more on the way

Shillong, Jan 15: Installation of CCTV cameras across Meghalaya has made significant progress with 227 of the initial batch already functioning.

Informing this on Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “I think about 70-80 per cent have already done… we will start the second phase where we will take another 200 of them.”

The chief minister highlighted that the government is also focusing on installing CCTVs and streetlights in Jowai, Tura, and Shillong, with the project expected to be completed over a year.

“This is going to be a year-long process… it is happening at a very fast pace and many of the localities have received it,” he added.

When asked about the expenditure on CCTV installations, Sangma emphasized that security and safety are paramount.

“I don’t think we can simply look at the financial part of this as it is mandatory from the security aspect, safety aspect, drug aspect and other things that are there that requires constant monitoring,” he said.

The Chief Minister assured that the government is working closely with local communities, including the dorbar shnongs in Shillong, to ensure the project is implemented effectively.

“So, it is a great investment and we are happy that we are moving in the right manner… all is being done with the consultation of the different dorbar shnongs in Shillong,” he added.
