817 localities, 427 sub-localities registered under MRSSA

Shillong, Feb 19: Altogether 817 localities and 427 sub-localities have been registered under the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), 2016 and the process is ongoing, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a resolution moved by the Leader of Opposition, Mukul Sangma, the Chief Minister said, “The second part, which is getting registration and monitoring people coming to the state, this aspect can continue. I can assure the House.

Highlighting the progress made since 2018, the Chief Minister said the government started implementing the Act and setting up facilitation centres (or entry-exit points), but faced a setback when the High Court struck it down.

Sangma emphasized the need for collective effort, saying, “This can happen only when all of us work together. Everybody has to put in an effort.”

He noted that the exercise is massive, considering Meghalaya has over 7,000 listed villages.

The Chief Minister assured that work is moving forward, with plans to expand the registration process to other parts of the state.
