Safeguarding human rights of utmost importance, says Governor

Shillong, Dec 11: Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar on Tuesday emphasized the importance of safeguarding human rights in every sphere of life and stressed the role of society in ensuring justice, fairness, and equality. 

Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion of International Human Rights Day held at the State Convention Centre, the governor noted that Meghalaya, with its rich cultural heritage, must continue to foster an environment where human rights are respected and upheld, particularly for the marginalized and vulnerable sections of society.

The event was also attended by Agatha K Sangma, Chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and Justice T. Vaiphei, Chairperson of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission. 

Sangma and Vaiphei spoke about the significant progress made in protecting human rights in the state, with a particular focus on children’s rights and the work of various commissions in ensuring justice for those whose rights have been violated.

The event was aimed at strengthening the understanding of human rights and encouraging active participation in safeguarding these rights at all levels. The commemoration of International Human Rights Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to uphold the dignity and rights of every individual.

The event was organised by the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and witnessed significant participation from dignitaries, senior government officials from different departments, probationary trainee officers from North-East Police Academy, activists, law students and citizens.
