Ex-MLA for amendment to building bylaws

‘Houses built with NOC from headmen deprived of water, power connections’

Shillong, Feb 1: Former Mawlai MLA Process T Sawkmie, who is contesting the upcoming KHADC election as an independent candidate, has assured to work for bringing necessary amendment to building byelaws, if elected in the February-21 election.

After filing his nomination papers on Friday, Sawkmie said, “I am very much concerned about the building byelaws because it has affected the people to a large extent.”

He objected to the provision in which people, who bought small plots of land such as 1500 sq ft to build a house, have to part with certain portions of the land as per building byelaws.

Sawkmie also alleged that there are too many formalities and technical problems besides delay in obtaining building permission from the district council.”

Stating that people, who went ahead with house construction with NOC from locality headmen, have been deprived of electricity and water connections, Sawkmie said the authorities concerned cited lack of permission from the KHADC.

“If I win in the election, I would raise this issue immediately in the first session of the Council and I know all MDCs will support as we need to bring an amendment to this,” he assured.

He also emphasised the need to strengthen the traditional institutions and said, “It is time for us to give honorarium to headmen so that they can give the best services to the people of the region.”
