Shillong, May 2: Following the Bijni Complex of Captain Williamson Sangma State University running into legal hurdle, the state government is in search for an alternative site for Shillong campus of the university.

“Education department was supposed to use the Bijni Complex for the state university’s Shillong campus. However, as the process went on, the claim of ownership has become a dispute today,” education minister Rakkam A Sangma told reporters on Thursday.

Informing that the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) took the matter to court claiming ownership of the complex since its inception, the minister said, “We will wait for the court to decide.”

Meanwhile, the government has started looking for other options, both for a temporary and a permanent campus.

“We are looking for some buildings or campus space to start the Shillong campus at the earliest,” Sangma said, adding that effort is on to get land allotment at Mawdiangdiang.

He also listed setting up an administrative office and appointing a pro vice-chancellor as priority task for operationalising the Shillong campus as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, a meeting scheduled at university’s Tura campus on Friday will comprehensively review the current state of infrastructure and operations of the university, he said.

The minister said the government is committed to starting full-fledged academic activities of the university from August 2025.
