Growth of Meghalaya’s tourism sector seen as a ‘threat’: Minister
Shillong, June 5: Concerned over the widespread “misinformation” about the Indore couple case, tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh has accused the national media of having “lack of understanding” about Meghalaya and a “deep-seated malice” towards the state and its people.
Condemning the national media for “misreporting” the incident, Lyngdoh said the national media see the growth of Meghalaya’s tourism sector as a “threat” and has always had a bias against the North East.
“It just shows their biasness against our region and especially with the growth of tourism in Meghalaya, they see it as a threat,” he said.
Terming the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi an isolated case, the tourism minister said, “In fact, we do not know what actually happened until all the investigation is completed, no final word can be said on the matter.”
Heavily endorsing the people of Sohra, one of the biggest tourist destinations in the region, he said, “Sohra (Cherrapunjee) has had decades of tourism without any blood on its character. There has been no record of any incidents of violence ever in the past.”
Explaining Sohra’s long history of hospitality, he said, “We have had the first missionaries who landed in Sohra in 1841. We have the Ram Krishna Mission, which has its biggest network in the state, with its headquarters in Sohra.”
“This attitude (misreporting) only portrays their lack of understanding of Meghalaya and also a deep-seated malice towards the state and its people,” he said.
Meanwhile, search operations are on to rescue Sona, the wife of the deceased tourist.
