Key proposals deferred as GHADC debates financial transparency
Shillong, Aug 3: The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) on Monday devoted much of its sitting to a general discussion on the Council’s budget estimates, while two key proposals were deferred for detailed deliberation when the House reconvenes on Tuesday.
The day’s proceedings remained largely procedural, with members using the opportunity to examine the Council’s financial direction and administrative functioning ahead of more substantive policy discussions scheduled for August 4.
A significant part of the debate focused on transparency in the Council’s financial dealings, particularly loan agreements and corporate documents. Members stressed that all such financial engagements should continue to be placed before the House for discussion and scrutiny.
The House also deliberated on previous loan agreements and corporate documentation in which the Council had been associated. Members maintained that all executive decisions relating to loans and financial matters had been brought before the House for deliberation. They cautioned against any distortion of facts or attempts to mislead the House regarding past administrative decisions.
Although two important motions and proposals were introduced during the sitting, detailed debate on both was deferred to Tuesday. The next session is also expected to take up several other matters listed by members for discussion.
The ongoing Council session comes at a crucial time, with members expected to deliberate extensively on issues relating to the Council’s finances, governance and administrative priorities in the days ahead.
