Welfare of Street Dogs: Agatha seeks to make Meghalaya a model state

Shillog, Aug 21: Seeking to make Meghalaya a model state regarding co-existence with street dogs, the Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) has urged the government to develop a proper system to ensure welfare of street dogs in the state.

In her letter to chief minister Conrad K Sangma, the MSCPCR chairperson Agatha Sangma appreciated the chief minister’s efforts to strengthen welfare of street dogs and sought his intervention in developing a comprehensive framework to promote compassion, care, and co-existence.

The MSCPCR chairperson also highlighted importance of designated feeding areas, sterilisation, and vaccination programmes, and awareness initiatives to ensure the well-being of street dogs.

Referring to Government of India’s commitment to addressing stray dog issues through the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, the former Lok Sabha MP said, “We believe that Meghalaya can become a model state that embodies the spirit of ahimsa and co-existence.”

“We urge the Chief Minister to take concrete steps to implement a humane framework for street dog welfare, promoting a culture of compassion and care in our state,” the MSCPCR letter said.
