Khasi and Garo Languages to be included as ‘optional’ in Post Office Recruitment process

Shillong, July 24: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) has raised concerns about the recruitment of individuals from outside the state for the positions of Gramin Dak Sevaks at the Shillong General Post Office.

According to FKJGP president , Dundee C. Khongsit, nearly all of the 45 Gramin Dak Sevak positions have been filled by candidates from outside the state. Khongsit said that this issue is due to the absence of local languages – Khasi and Garo, as optional languages during the recruitment process, which has disadvantaged local youths.

Khongsit pointed out that other northeastern states, such as Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, allow applicants to apply in their local languages. He criticized the state government for not addressing this issue over the past two to three years.

On Wednesday, the FKJGP met with the Chief Post Master General in Shillong to discuss the challenges faced by job seekers in the state. Following the meeting, Khongsit reported that the Chief Post Master General informed them that the Ministry of Communications and Department of Post will allow local job seekers to choose Khasi and Garo as optional languages in the recruitment process.

Khongsit further stated that the Post Master General indicated that 683 new vacant posts across Meghalaya will soon be available, with the recruitment process likely to commence shortly.
