Meghalaya eyes ₹15,000 cr investment in key sectors

Shillong, Feb 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma Monday emphasized public investment as the engine of growth for Meghalaya, outlining plans to leverage central funding and boost connectivity in the state.

“Public investment will continue to be the engine of growth for Meghalaya,” Sangma said, estimating a 67% increase in SASCI expenditure to ₹4,500 crore in 2026-27. Centrally- sponsored and central sector schemes are expected to reach ₹6,833 crore.

The state targets ₹15,000 crore worth new external aided projects (EAPs) in roads, power, healthcare, urban development, and human development for the next Finance Commission period.

“Strengthening air connectivity will be a game changer for Meghalaya,” Sangma said, highlighting the upcoming expansion of Umroi Airport’s runway to 2,400 meters.

Allocations include ₹150 crore for Umroi Airport and ₹50 crore for Baljek Airport in Tura, handed over to Airport Authority of India for operationalization.
