Around 350 CCTV cameras, 500 street lights being installed across Tura

Tura, March 8: Development projects worth over Rs 700 crore are currently under way in and around Tura town, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed while inaugurating a beautification project in Tura on Saturday.

“Different interventions at different levels worth more than Rs 700 crore are being implemented for the development of Tura town,” he said.

Highlighting infrastructure initiatives under the Smart City Mission, he said Rs 60 crore has been allocated for paving internal roads in different localities.

Besides, Rs 15 crore has been spent in Phase I for street lighting and beautification, while another Rs 15 crore has been sanctioned for the beautification of Tura Bazar.

Sangma was addressing the programme organised by Nehru Ading Development and Welfare Committee (NADWC) at Old Church Compound, marking inauguration of the beautification project at Nehru Ading, Hawakhana in Tura town.

The event brought together community leaders, local residents, and members of the committee to mark the completion of the locality improvement initiative aimed at enhancing the surroundings and infrastructure of the area.

On the occasion, the Chief Minister also unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the inauguration of the project.

In his address, the Chief Minister expressed happiness at visiting the locality for the first time in an official capacity.

“I am happy to visit this locality for the first time in my official capacity,” he said, adding that transformations are gradually and steadily taking place in Tura, though much more still needs to be done.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the ongoing City Beautification Drive, under which CCTV cameras and streetlights are being installed across the town.

“Airports, 5 Star Hotels, road connectivity, CCTV networks and street lighting are all important and crucial for building the ecosystem required to take Tura to the next level,” he said.

He informed that around 350 CCTV cameras and 500 street lights are being installed across Tura as part of the initiative. For Nehru Ading locality specifically, four CCTV cameras and six street lights have been provided.

The Chief Minister also stressed the important role of the community in maintaining civic discipline and cleanliness.

He cited the example of Japan to highlight the importance of responsible behaviour among citizens.

“In Japan, you will not find dustbins on the streets and roads. People carry small bags to collect their own garbage and take it home to dispose of it. Civic sense must come from within the community,” he said, urging residents to maintain cleanliness and preserve the improvements made in the locality.

During the interaction with the community, several issues and suggestions were raised, including the need for a community hall and additional support for further beautification of the locality.

The community also highlighted the requirement for a boundary wall for Hawakhana Government L.P. School and renovation of the school building.

Concerns were also raised regarding the drug menace at Jerusalem Junction, which has reportedly become a distribution point for suppliers and abusers.

In addition, the need for water connectivity at a local SSA school was also brought to the Chief Minister’s attention.

The programme began with a welcome address by Cameron N. Sangma, President of NADWC, followed by an invocation prayer by Evie Pamade R. Marak, Assistant Pastor of HBC Tura.

A briefing on the project was presented by Melvilline R. Momin, Secretary of NADWC, outlining the objectives and work undertaken under the beautification initiative.

During the programme, representatives of the committee also presented a memorandum highlighting local development priorities.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Andy Tengsak R. Marak.
