SHILLONG/TURA, AUG 7: Meghalaya BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai on Wednesday led a team of party leaders to three Khasi Hills border points with Bangladesh to get a first-hand view of the situation in the border region in the light of unprecedented violence in the neighbouring country.
Shullai, accompanied by party vice-president Gagan Jain and state executive member Tobiak Marak visited the border outposts of Dawki Tamabil and Pyrdiwah in East Khasi Hills and held meetings with the DIG BSF and the BSF Commandant of the area.
The team expressed satisfaction with the stringent security measures adopted by the BSF, wherein one soldier has been posted every hundred metres or less, making any kind of influx impossible.
The border guards have been bolstered by reinforcements of 21 Bihar Regiment of the Indian Army, vastly improving the security scenario.
The BJP team found the situation in the border areas to be peaceful, though there were reports of attacks on posts of the Border Guards Bangladesh, on the other side, leading to the Bangladeshi troopers abandoning their posts during the peak of the student uprising. The BGB has since returned to manning their posts, ensuring better security on both sides.
Shullai also interacted with the people of the two areas who expressed confidence in the BSF. He assured the local residents of all possible assistance should any need arise.
The villagers told the legislator that the situation was currently peaceful and thanked him profusely for being the only elected legislator to visit the region since trouble broke out.
Shullai is due to meet the Meghalaya governor and brief him of the situation.
SGH restricts border movement
The District Magistrate of South Garo Hills District PR Marak in exercise of his power conferred upon him under section 163 BNSS, imposed night curfew from 6pm to 6am morning within 200 meters of the international border from Wednesday.
The order stated that any movements of individuals intent to cross Bangladesh or illegally enter Indian territory is prohibited also the unauthorized or unlawful assembles of five or more persons carrying arms or other instruments that can be used as weapons including lathis, spears, swords, sticks and brick it’s etc in and around the Indo-Bangla border.
Further, the order prohibits the illegal and undesirable activities including the smuggling of cattle, contraband items, betelnuts, tobacco, sugar etc.
