Ammunition found in Williamnagar Mosque result of carelessness, say Police

Williamnagar, March 13: Police in Williamnagar have clarified that the recovery of camouflage uniforms and live ammunition from the premises of a mosque in the town was the result of careless handling by a police personnel and not an intentional act.

According to a press release issued by the East Garo Hills Police, a group of people informed the district police on Friday morning that camouflage clothing and live rounds of ammunition had been found inside the compound of a mosque in the town.

Upon inquiry, it was learned that a personnel of the East Garo Hills District Executive Force had been staying in a rented accommodation within the mosque compound. The personnel, who is currently on sanctioned leave, had left behind his personal belongings including police uniforms with name plate, belt, boots, camouflage clothing and an ammunition pouch.

Police said four live rounds of ammunition were found among the belongings.

Officials stated that the personnel should have deposited the ammunition and related equipment in the armoury kote during the leave period, as mandated under standard procedure, but instead kept them at the private accommodation.

Authorities described this as unauthorized storage resulting from negligence and carelessness rather than any deliberate or malicious act.

The items have since been seized and a case has been registered at Williamnagar Police Station under Section 25(1-A) of the Arms Act for further legal action.

Superintendent of Police S. A. Rynjah also appealed to the public to refrain from spreading misinformation or malicious content on social media regarding the incident, warning that strict legal action would be taken against those circulating false information.
