Assam elections: NPP eyes first win, pins hope on Dimasa leader

Shillong, March 25: Meghalaya’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP), which has fielded a few candidates in the upcoming Assam assembly elections, has expressed confidence of opening its account in the neighbouring state.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Chief Minister and NPP chief Conrad K Sangma said his party has good prospects since the party has given a long-term commitment to certain constituencies in the state.

Emphasising his party’s expansion efforts in different parts of North East, he said the party has fielded candidates in some constituencies based on communications with some leaders over a long period.

“They have shown interest and based on that we took the decision to field a few candidates,” he said.

Making it clear that a political journey is just about an election, he said, “It is a process; it is a commitment that we are making and we are starting our commitment towards the state of Assam.”

“We will continue to move forward and we hope that we will be able to open an account in this election in Assam,” he said.

On the prospects of NPP candidate Daniel Langthasa in Dima Hasao region, Sangma said, “Absolutely, he will make an impact. He is very popular; he is very committed. He is a person with a very great vision for his people and a person who is very humble and at the same time at the ground level and a person who is very connected.”

He added, “We have very high expectations from him not just for his constituency but for the region as a whole and for the party he is a great asset and I am sure he is going to come out successful and I wish him the very best.”
