86.8 pc students clear exams ** Top position bagged by Wangaal Lama of Gorkha Pathshala HS School, Shillong
Shillong, April 7: Results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examination 2026, conducted by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE), have recorded an overall pass percentage of 86.84%, slightly lower than last year’s 87.10%.
In the results declared on Tuesday, 42,228 out of total 48,623 candidates successfully cleared the examination with boys recording a pass percentage of 94.14% and girls 92.88%.
Regular candidates continued to perform strongly, with Regular-1 candidates registering a pass percentage of 93.30%, while Regular-2 candidates recorded 80.72%.
In contrast, non-regular and private candidates lagged behind with significantly lower success rates.
Wangaal Lama of Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School, Shillong, secured the first position with 585 marks, setting the benchmark in this year’s examination. Vishal Kumar of Embee Rosebud Higher Secondary School, Tura, followed closely in second place with 576 marks.
The third position was shared by Prajukta Roy of Seven Set Higher Secondary School, Shillong and Prinita Das of Pechon A Sangma Memorial Police Public Secondary School, Tura, both securing 575 marks.
In the fourth position, three students — Samdi Mukhim of St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong, Nathanael Mantre Laloo of Seven Set Higher Secondary School, Shillong, and Wandarihun Lyngkhoi of Anderson Higher Secondary School, Nongstoin — secured 572 marks each.
Jenita Pator of Sawlyngdoh Higher Secondary School, Mowkaiaw secured the fifth position with 571 marks, completing the list of the top five rank holders in the state.
Meanwhile, sharp regional variations are seen in across the districts. West Jaintia Hills emerged as the best-performing district with a pass percentage of 94.99%, followed by South West Khasi Hills at 94.60% and East Khasi Hills at 94.17%.
East Khasi Hills also accounted for the largest share of successful candidates in the state. On the other hand, East Garo Hills (72.33%), North Garo Hills (72.70%) and South West Garo Hills (74.54%) recorded the lowest pass percentages, pointing to continuing disparities in educational outcomes across regions.
A comparison with previous years shows a marked improvement in overall performance since 2025, when the pass percentage jumped to 87.10% from much lower levels in earlier years.
The 2026 results, at 86.84%, indicate that the improved performance has largely been sustained, suggesting stabilisation in academic outcomes across the state.
The board has also released the merit list of the top 20 candidates and subject toppers, along with the results.
Students securing 75% and above in aggregate have been awarded star marks, while those scoring 80% or more in individual subjects have received letter marks.
Overall, the results reflect strong performance by regular candidates and leading districts in Khasi and Jaintia Hills, even as gaps in outcomes across parts of Garo Hills remain a concern.
