Shillong, Apr 20: The recent discovery of a new snake species, Calamaria garoensis, in Meghalaya’s Garo Hills region has drawn praise from Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
Sangma on Monday commended the efforts of the researchers from Help Earth, Cotton University, Assam Don Bosco University, Mizoram University, Zoological Survey of India, and the National Research and Innovation Agency (Indonesia) for bringing global attention to Meghalaya’s natural heritage.
“Heartiest congratulations to the team of researchers on the discovery of a new snake species, ‘Calamaria garoensis’, found in the Garo Hills. This remarkable discovery highlights the rich and unique biodiversity of our state and the immense value of our forests,” Sangma said in a social media post.
He also lauded the efforts of the institutions involved in the research.
Officials said the discovery underscores the ecological significance of the Garo Hills region, which continues to be a hotspot for biodiversity and scientific research. (PTI)
