Denial of treatment to child with suspected rabies

Medical Committee formed to probe Tura incident, report within 7 days

Tura, April 29: A four member enquiry committee consisting of state doctors have been formed by the Meghalaya Government to investigate the alleged denial of admission to a child with suspected rabies at Tura Civil Hospital, last Friday. The 11 year old girl died on the return journey to her village.

The order, issued today from the Directorate of Health Services (MI), comes in the backdrop of a report that was first broken by this newspaper on April 25.

The government notification stated that the committee will be headed by Dr. Sombari Boro, Joint Director of Health Services (Garo Hills Division). Other members include Dr. Perosh Marak, Joint Director of Health Services (MCH&FW); Dr. Cruzie N. Sangma, District Medical and Health Officer of East Garo Hills; and Dr. Valerie Laloo, State Surveillance Officer under the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP).

The committee has been tasked with conducting a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the alleged denial of admission at Tura Civil Hospital. It will also examine whether there were any lapses, negligence, or dereliction of duty on the part of medical personnel involved. The enquiry committee has been directed to submit its report within seven days.

“All concerned are hereby directed to extend full cooperation to the committee,” the order stated.

The incident of denying a patient medical care  has raised concerns over emergency response protocols and access to critical care in government health facilities, particularly in suspected rabies cases, which require immediate medical intervention.
