Shillong, May 26: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma is taking part in the 16th Canadian Parliamentary Seminar being held in Ottawa, Canada from May 25 to 29.
Organized by the Parliament of Canada, the seminar’s theme this year is “Parliaments in the 21st Century: Innovation and Adaptation for Democracy”.
Parliamentary leaders and officials from across the worked have converged at the seminary to discuss contemporary challenges and evolving democratic practices.

The seminar’s key agenda include an overview of the Canadian parliamentary system, the role of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, engaging youth in parliamentary democracy, promoting women’s political leadership, modern parliamentary infrastructure, and mechanisms for holding governments accountable.
Sessions will also cover adapting to traditional and social media, electronic voting, hybrid proceedings in the House of Commons, and the future of artificial intelligence in parliaments with a focus on innovation, ethics, and accountability.
Speaker Sangma is accompanied by Malthus S Sangma, Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, and Raja K Kharpuri, Deputy Secretary, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
The participation of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly delegation is expected to provide valuable insights into emerging parliamentary practices and innovations, further strengthening democratic governance and legislative functioning in the State.
