Aizawl, June 3: Union Minister L Murugan on Wednesday underscored the importance of education and sustainable agriculture in achieving India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047, officials said.
Murugan, who was on tour to Kolasib district near the Assam border, visited various educational institutions and took stock of government initiatives in the northern district.
Interacting with students at a state-run model primary school, he spoke about the country’s vision of transforming into a developed nation under the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative.
He said today’s students would be at the forefront of shaping the nation’s future and called upon them to contribute through education, innovation and responsible citizenship.
Later, the minister launched the ‘Khed Bachao Abhiyan’ at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) centre in Kolasib. The campaign aims to promote chemical fertiliser-free cultivation, improve soil health and equip farmers with modern agricultural knowledge.
The initiative also seeks to encourage sustainable farming practices while enhancing agricultural productivity and environmental conservation.
Addressing officials of ICAR and KVK Kolasib as well as local farmers, Murugan emphasised that agriculture would remain a key pillar in India’s development journey.
He stressed the need to provide farmers with access to the latest technologies, scientific innovations and climate-resilient farming practices to ensure food security and improve crop quality.
On Tuesday, Murugan chaired a meeting with officials and representatives of leading civil society organisations, including Young Mizo Association (YMA), during which he underscored the Centre’s commitment to the development of the Northeast, promotion of tourism, and strengthening of education and infrastructure, the sources said.
The minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the central government place high priority on the development of the Northeast, describing the region’s progress as integral to India’s overall growth.
He expressed satisfaction over the progress achieved in sports and women empowerment initiatives in Mizoram.
Murugan further pointed out significant improvements in connectivity in the state, which he said boosted tourism.
He noted that the Mizoram government and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) are working closely to accelerate development projects across the state, adding that strong support from the Centre has contributed to rapid progress in the region.
Murugan also said efforts would be made to encourage prominent filmmakers from across the country to shoot in Mizoram, leveraging the state’s scenic landscapes to promote both tourism and cinema. (PTI)
