Shillong, June 10: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has strongly condemned the killing of six Naga civilians in Manipur, terming it a “brutal” and “senseless act of violence”.
“I strongly and unequivocally condemn the brutal killing of six Naga civilians. This senseless act of violence is deeply disturbing and wholly unacceptable,” Sangma said in a statement.
He said the incident was more painful as it came despite efforts by the United Naga Council (UNC) to foster dialogue and reconciliation.
“What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking is that it occurred despite the goodwill and sincere efforts extended by the United Naga Council (UNC) to create an atmosphere conducive to dialogue, reconciliation, and peaceful engagement.
A gesture intended to build trust and foster understanding has instead been met with violence, resulting in the loss of innocent lives and immense suffering for their families and communities,” he said.
Sangma extended condolences to the victims’ families and stressed that violence had no justification.
“I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and stand in solidarity with all those affected by this tragedy. There can be no justification for the taking of innocent lives. At this difficult moment, I urge all concerned to exercise restraint and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said.
Calling for peaceful resolution of differences, he added, “Lasting peace can only be built through mutual respect, dialogue, and a commitment to resolving differences through peaceful means rather than violence. May the departed souls rest in peace, and may their families find strength and comfort in this hour of grief.”
